Somerset & Dorset – Included 7F

Only 5 days left until the release of our S&D route! At this stage we thought it would be useful to provide some more details on some of the included rolling stock. While a number of locomotives and stock have been provided (which are enhanced versions of those included within the payware DLC), the flagship locomotive is undoubtedly the version of the Caledonia Works SDJR 7F that is being shipped with our route.

We are incredibly grateful to Kris from Caledonia Works for providing the engine, which has been furnished with an appropriate Whitaker tablet exchange apparatus, so players can simulate the token exchanges throughout the route. Additionally, the engine has had a weathered texture applied to it, to reflect the run-down condition they would have been found in during the late 1950s.

The engine is Quick Drive-ready, and will be available for players to use with a wide slection of coach and wagon rakes.

Sidmouth Branch Announcement

Hello world! My name is Leonard and I've been a member of the GAD team for about 4 years. You may already know me from my scenario packs on the GAD website and recently, I have recently decided to try my hand at route-building.

My first project is not a standalone route, but is a new extension for GAD's West of England Mainline. The Sidmouth Railway: an 8.3 mile line, with stations at Ottery St Mary, Tipton St Johns, and Sidmouth. The line branched off the mainline at Sidmouth Junction (now Feniton), principal trains stopped here to connect with trains to Sidmouth and Exmouth, often with Through Coaches.

AVvXsEjiDSYvgRq_6iB968m3GrVO5P2gAtobj4NQTzXnS4S8U1Nc-AtPrVueYLurEURvWfljENImGHlur3kkYloK5zdsCuu0ayu2IYkfq-evsXkYuHkR6lp1whhmfYT-qffearsNkQx2_nMfOUsfmXlzlFraOWPieeAzSiltvCUMVDcISjIIlUuBGH0ixZ_VzLs=s16000
From there the line drops down into the Otter Valley at a ruling grade of 1 in 53, it then runs beside the river for roughly 5 miles, eventually crossing the river just North of Tipton. Through the water meadows of the Otter Valley, the track is relatively straight and level, as the railway passes many farms and cottages: the apple orchards are abundant here.
AVvXsEgsRXAYeLsClVmXwrD1pLjHeKqM9gUmejRXnK3akvYI4MErjYCFom63IyDu_tGCFM7g7ZL8LwImJ__jYJq5iPOQ5h4XRYdwKMHN-9ele7USet-U1d2dsBq0D7U-2ObKhmEdd-Ft_Xqzmz0iFOexG9nm6pt5rdGDKEdgVI6wPrC4o12u1bvHgDn--Pto0VY=s16000

Between Ottery and the Junction, there were two gated road crossings at Gosford and Cadhay both
of which were 24hrs manned, and had their own signals worked by groundframe.

AVvXsEiCGFQVccVpaElXCrrKgzlcuYuM7U9EVUTVx-GtjE5vJxViXd7Gei--Wdv6rVSALbG0kDkHNGtKZ_yNU018Mj7UXxWvrhhyPO_j94pudf5fPZv3aWVqPZ4UeM4IEuaHejyNyLm_NCYLsjeyS9GVJWhI6Elu-aV_ha2xxcYeLk6fT7HSQ_ERxPvELbVugE4=s16000
Just under 3 miles from the junction is the first crossing point at Ottery St. Mary. There was significant market traffic from this station which warranted its own daily goods train

AVvXsEiHAYoWC06MFSZidTFMgi1UZTDbtI8eWQ4GMB8m-EreMQCB9gcCFR4cneoKtk9s-OsnDtej98BJOjRQ4WD97bmFonLnD-w1dvgFr9WPkGHEesojUblRsFXxppu8a4TWr_o2Jg0M2OBNkuVHhDVQIWLZivknLCv3J25npb_PLp2TL6iJPa19WCE1KOYygyI=s16000

After reaching Tipton St Johns, the branch for Budleigh and Exmouth splits off, and our line climbs out of the Otter Valley to Bowd Summit, with a challenging ruling grade of 1 in 45. This station, along with Hawill Junction further west , were the busiest single-line junctions on the SR, with most Sidmouth trains making a connection with Tipton-Exmouth trains and vice versa.

AVvXsEjkTDLjJQmuv5IE5SauxuCHSeSbfmqmuZWdhVMsx5CdqIs2Hdqjn8St4h0KmmCaM5HjVH5eyFUPHGoaAcH9Vap9IxNvlfKYxigPcjvFW7BSc9sK4tHRppZnVrPiXQFjWK1GAw1O-Ny-QtCcpSwC0jSLsCzv7E7TVK8oeiJidp6t61TVTUlfrnjN7jsmbss=s16000

Climbing up to Bowd summit, the line passes through Harpford wood, the most desolate part of the line.
Conifer trees abound, and the risk of lineside fires from engines charging the bank is apparent.

AVvXsEhtpjTLG-jHyh-8A-bHzJZ5QuUyDlpq8SAalcWO6nMLY_FiYNOoNoWH7INe5HIcqvjnD05oJGEsY0MfDN5nSNaXmOw2GUo584HGact-aOBzW-PuFzDJeVDVNTXIQVN4pLvQlCC6kAWMWi7JXpR4xU4OQvZY4QuXyozxCrnWr3Zcz_T0ydG1I8QbQMW9CLs=s16000

At Bowd farm bridge, we reach the summit. The climb eases off and we descend at 1 in 54 into the valley of the River Sid. The road overbridge at Bowd still stands, as do most of the engineering structures on the line.

AVvXsEjZT8Rola5DmIJnO8QjZAzRWRWfsFGYWwJQIzsL36j04Dfz-hyiMatOLcMqNuYDZzR7g4-ygvEm_SeZ2stqx4_KnxOu2_ExzRa7rDXNYTh9WniOL-BxM-QpMQfLST3BzkwxjLeUiJWPWvTRup0GRFT-Bie3qLJKrvFfMrxYf02CcB_QH9dxZSSemiiQ6IY=s16000

The station at Sidmouth stopped just outside the town itself, about a mile from the seafront. There was a bus service to Sidmouth Town centre and onward to the sea, as there still is today.

AVvXsEh5SjWdqfU0imeFHkTpEll1D9L7bly7Ma1GWlMxSzDQK_Geh_gfqi1kaDKh5-Bl6SPVKpBOvSLdKsw8idYIBdsuUx3TmfJ6NQbC6X7c16HCjM8TBVxanOEwUtkZC98srXK7GIcPD679NaX4saGATU3YPqVheKNlIwYLgHX4rZ0RrRP8HNTcIJhk5t8mI3Y=s16000
With steep hills and a 50mph speed limit, we hope that this route will provide a challenging and speedy drive, especially with those 12 coach Saturday extras! The majority of the scenery has been built, but the fine details, such as signalling, telegraph poles, and custom assets have yet to be added. Therefore all screenshots are work in progress, and we look forward to sharing developments with you as they occur.

I look forward to sharing more progress with you soon. Please note my computer settings are lower, but the route graphics look similar to the rest of the route.

Stroudley Coaches Progress #1

I am making good progress on the LBSCR Stroudley coaches pack, after a long break due to other commitments. In a series of posts I will highlight some of the features I have added as the coaches are developed.

Random Roof Variation

We often associate the pre-grouping period with fresh white canvas roofs, however photographs from the time reveal this isn't the case. For this pack, I have made 4 roof colour variations which will be randomly selected depending on the livery. Earlier liveries are more likely to have freshly-outshopped white roofs, whereas later ones will be greyer.

 1. Outshopped but used in service:

2. Lightly weathered:

3. Weathered:

4. Heavily weathered:

As you can see, the weathering applies to the oil lamp chimney pots. It will also be applied to the gas lamps when these are developed.

The colours can be set via the railvehicle number (RVN), using ;RT=[1,2,3,4]. If you want to set the whole train, you can use ;RTA=[1,2,3,4] on one coach to set the whole continuous rake. Here, [x,y,z] means you select one of the numbers in square brackets.

Oil Lamps at Night

The early versions of these coaches, particularly in the 1870s and 1880s, were illuminated by oil lamps. This required a member of staff to climb onto the carriage roof, remove the bung, and place the oil lamp in the roof aperture. This form of lighting was rather dark and dingey according to contemporary accounts, an effect which I have tried to replicate.

1. Oil lamp in use

2. No oil lamp in daytime

To reproduce the lighting effects from an oil lamp, I have developed a script which simulates the flickering of the flame. Additionally, there is a small animated flame for added realism. Here is a short video demonstration of the carriage interior at night.

Note how dark it is! Later developments in carriage lighting, such as gas lamps, will be included on later liveries, with adjusting lighting parameters to represent the differences between these modes.

Carriage lighting is automatically applied if the start time of the scenario meets certain criteria, depending on the season. It can be forced on/off in individual coaches using the RVN flag ;LI=[0,1]. As of right now, the lights won't come on at a certain time of day (as in reality the lights had to be manually lit and placed in the carriage).

It should be noted that the lights are not shadow-casting, but will still have a very small performance hit on older machines. No more so than yard lamps, for example.

Thank you for reading. Please remember all content here is work-in-progress.

The Shepton Branch

We've added a new route to the work in progress (WIP) section of our website. The Shepton Branch is being worked on by TrolleyFodder, to represent a ficticious pre-WWII GWR branch line set in Somerset.

"This route is an 8 mile fictional GWR branch line set between 1930-40. Originally built during the outbreak of WWI as a spur for a small air force outpost west of Kingsbury, the route weaves its way through the rolling hills and countryside north-west of Yeovil. After the war ended, the line then opened to serve the local farmland and neighbouring villages. A few years after, the line was extended a couple more miles when a small coal seam was found to the south, terminating at Shepton."

You can read more about the project on the route page. Estimated release date is late 2026.

Great Western Levels (1902) Released

Great Western Levels (1902) is set in an alternate timeline where the railways in Somerset were built around a GWR mainline from Salisbury to Williton, rather than the Bristol & Exeter line. The route covers around 42 miles of track, with 27 miles of mainline, an 8 mile branch to Bridgwater, and a 5 mile branch to Highbridge. There are also extensive industrial branches totalling up another few miles.

The route features the GWR in a transitional period, where the Broad Gauge has been gone for 10 years but it is still a decidedly Victorian railway. Red distant signals, baulk road track, and point signals are indications of the early period in which this route is set. The route is all managed by the GWR, but the LSWR and other companies frequently venture onto it to take advantage of its access to the docks and holiday traffic.

We hope you thoroughly enjoy this route, which is the culmination of countless hours of work from a wide team of people. Thanks especially to MM for financing a large part of the route building.

This route is available to download here.

Great Western Levels (1902) Trailer

We have uploaded a trailer for our upcoming Great Western Levels (1902) route!

This fictitious route is set in rural Somerset at the turn of the last century, from Glastonbury to Williton via the coast, and branches from Highbridge to Bridgwater. This makes it a perfect pre-grouping race track for not only GWR engines, but LSWR and other companies. Watch the trailer below:

You can read more information about the route on its page.

5 Years of West of England

21st July 2025 marks 5 years since West of England mainline was started.

On 21st July 2020 Joe laid the first scenery at Lower Abbey Farm, just South of Axminster:

Working diligently, Joe continued progress for two days, making a start on Axminster station and laying more track. On the 23rd July he started the first asset for the route – Axminster signal box:

By the 26th July, I (Harry) had started route building, fleshing out Joe's work so far and developing my route building technique, as it was my first time attempting the route editor:

It was more than 14 months of work – during which time several more people joined the team – until Phase 1 of the route released on 9th November 2021. This was followed by the Seaton Branch on 23rd April 2022, then finally Phase 2 on 23rd December 2023. Since then, my work has focused on other projects, but I'd like to celebrate 18,450 downloads over all releases of the route. I'm very proud of what we have achieved and I hope one day to extend it even further.

Golden Age Developments, of course, has grown to be much larger than just the West of England mainline. Flagship projects like Dorset Coast and the upcoming Somerset and Dorset cannot be ignored, but nor can our numerous scenario packs, reskins, and patches. Our output consists of 211 website uploads with over 213,000 downloads from over 30,000 unique IP addresses. 14 team members, 134 donators, well over 1500 discord members, and 1700 facebook followers are proof that the Steam era scene is still very much alive in Train Simulator. We have many more projects in progress and planning, which I will be excited to share in the future.
